Within minutes the calls start. Not one call, six or eight, from companies you have never heard of, at dinner, for the next two weeks. You never got your answer. What you got was sold, because on most of those sites your phone number is the product and it goes to whoever pays for it.
So people stop asking. They take the financing the contractor put in front of them, or they carry a balance at twenty-something percent, not because it was the best option but because finding out felt like it would cost them something.

Most homeowners cannot explain the difference between a home equity loan and a cash-out refinance, and there is no reason they should be expected to. Nobody has ever had much incentive to explain it clearly, because the explanation frequently leads to the cheaper product rather than the more profitable one.
The result is a market where the person with the most to lose understands the least. Someone with a 3% mortgage gets talked into refinancing the whole balance. Someone who needs $40,000 signs contractor paper at 24.99% without ever hearing the word equity.
Everything on this site is built around fixing that specific problem. The calculators show the real numbers rather than a payment designed to look small. The guides say plainly when a product is the wrong choice. The comparison tool will tell you to keep the mortgage you have, which is the answer that earns us nothing.
